How to change a URL in WordPress

Note: There are 2 types of URLs that may need changing in WordPress, the domain or website address that all the pages sit under, and the names of individual pages.

Some people looking for how to change a url in WordPress will be wanting to know how to change the domain name that is used in all the links throughout their entire installation of WordPress. Perhaps they moved the website to a new domain, or perhaps they have exported a copy of their website and are importing it to a new installation in a new hosting account. Whatever the reason, if that is what you need to do then read on.

(However if you just want to change the url of a specific page, skip to the bottom of the page and we will explain how to do that there.)

To change a URL in WordPress, you can follow these steps:

1. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard:
– Visit your WordPress website (e.g., www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin) and log in using your credentials.
– You’ll be directed to the WordPress admin dashboard.

2. Install and activate a URL changing plugin (optional):
– Changing a URL in WordPress sometimes requires using a plugin, as it involves updating the database.
– There are several plugins available for this purpose, such as “Velvet Blues Update URLs,” “Better Search Replace,” or “Search & Replace.”
– In the admin dashboard, go to the “Plugins” menu and click on “Add New.”
– Search for the desired URL changing plugin, install it, and activate it.

3. Access the URL changing plugin:
– Once the plugin is activated, look for its menu or settings page in the WordPress admin dashboard.
– The exact location and name may vary depending on the plugin you installed.
– Typically, you can find it under “Tools” or within a dedicated menu added by the plugin.

4. Enter the old and new URLs:
– In the URL changing plugin’s settings, you’ll usually find fields to enter the old URL and the new URL.
– Enter the full old URL of the page or resource you want to change.
– Then enter the corresponding new URL that you want to replace it with.

5. Configure the replacement options:
– Depending on the plugin, you may have additional options to fine-tune the URL replacements.
– Check for options like case sensitivity, replacing in specific database tables, or running a test mode before making actual changes.
– Review the options and adjust them according to your needs.

6. Run the URL change process:
– Once you have configured the URL changing plugin, initiate the URL change process.
– Click the “Update URLs,” “Replace,” or similar button to begin the process.
– The plugin will search for instances of the old URL in your WordPress database and replace them with the new URL.

7. Verify the changes:
– After the URL changing process completes, it’s important to verify that the changes have been applied correctly.
– Navigate to the pages or resources that had the old URL and check if they now have the new URL.
– Test the links to ensure they are functioning correctly.

8. Update internal links (if necessary):
– If you changed a URL that is referenced within your website’s content, such as internal links or menu items, update them accordingly.
– Edit the pages or posts where the old URL is mentioned and replace it with the new URL.

Please note that changing URLs can have consequences for your website’s search engine optimization (SEO) and existing external links. It’s essential to set up proper redirection from the old URL to the new one to avoid broken links and negative impacts on your website’s traffic.

Always make a backup of your WordPress site and database before making any significant changes, including URL modifications.

If you encounter any difficulties or do not see the relevant options, consult the documentation or support forums for the URL changing plugin you installed, or seek assistance from WordPress support communities.

To change the URL of a single page in WordPress, you can follow these steps:

1. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard:
– Visit your WordPress website (e.g., www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin) and log in using your credentials.
– You’ll be directed to the WordPress admin dashboard.

2. Navigate to the Pages section:
– From the admin dashboard, click on the “Pages” option in the left-hand menu.
– This will display a list of all the pages on your WordPress site.

3. Locate the page you want to edit:
– Scroll through the list of pages or use the search functionality to find the specific page whose URL you want to change.
– Click on the page title to open the page editor.

4. Edit the page slug:
– Once the page editor is open, locate the permalink or slug field.
– The slug is the part of the URL that comes after the domain name and represents the page’s address.
– Click on the “Edit” or “Change Permalink” button/link next to the slug field.

5. Modify the page slug:
– In the editable field, you can modify the page slug to change the URL.
– Ensure that the new slug is descriptive, concise, and represents the content of the page.
– Remove any unwanted words or characters and use hyphens or underscores to separate words.
– It’s important to note that the slug should be unique across your website to avoid conflicts with other pages or posts.

6. Update the page:
– After modifying the page slug, click the “Update” or “Save” button to save the changes made to the page.
– This will update the URL of the page with the new slug.

7. Update internal links (if necessary):
– If you have internal links within your website that point to the old URL of the page, update them accordingly.
– Go through your content, including other pages, posts, menus, or widgets, and modify the links to reflect the new URL.

8. Test the new URL:
– Once you have updated the page slug and internal links, visit the page on your website to verify that the new URL is working correctly.
– Test any links pointing to the page from external sources or within your website to ensure they are updated and functioning properly.

Please note that changing the URL of a page may affect its SEO and any external links pointing to the old URL. It’s recommended to set up proper redirection from the old URL to the new one to avoid broken links and maintain SEO rankings.

If you encounter any difficulties or do not see the relevant options, consult WordPress documentation or reach out to their support community for further assistance specific to your installation.
