How to change the permalink in WordPress

To change the permalink structure in WordPress, you can follow these steps:

1. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard:
– Visit your WordPress website (e.g., www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin) and log in using your credentials.
– You’ll be directed to the WordPress admin dashboard.

2. Access the Permalink settings:
– From the admin dashboard, navigate to the “Settings” menu on the left-hand side.
– Click on “Permalinks” from the options that appear.
– This will take you to the Permalink settings page.

3. Choose a permalink structure:
– On the Permalink settings page, you’ll see several options for your permalink structure.
– WordPress provides common options like Plain, Day and Name, Month and Name, Numeric, Post Name, and Custom Structure.
– Select the permalink structure that best suits your needs by clicking on the radio button next to it.

4. Customise the permalink structure (optional):
– If you choose the “Custom Structure” option, you can define your own permalink structure using specific tags.
– WordPress provides various tags like %year%, %monthnum%, %day%, %postname%, and more that represent different elements of the permalink.
– You can arrange these tags in the custom structure field to create a permalink format of your choice.
– For example, “/%category%/%postname%/” would include the category and post name in the permalink.

5. Save the changes:
– After selecting or customising the permalink structure, scroll down to the bottom of the page.
– Click the “Save Changes” button to apply the new permalink structure to your website.

6. Update existing content (if necessary):
– Changing the permalink structure may affect the URLs of your existing content.
– WordPress automatically redirects old URLs to the new ones, but it’s recommended to update any internal links or references to the old permalinks within your content.
– You can manually update the permalinks of individual posts or pages by editing them in the WordPress editor and modifying the slug in the permalink field.

7. Test the new permalinks:
– After changing the permalink structure, visit your website and navigate to different pages to ensure that the URLs reflect the new structure.
– Test the links to make sure they are working correctly and are SEO-friendly.

Please note that changing the permalink structure can impact your website’s search engine optimisation (SEO) and existing links. It’s recommended to choose a permalink structure that is user-friendly and search engine-friendly from the beginning to avoid the need for frequent changes.

If you encounter any difficulties or do not see the relevant options, consult WordPress documentation or reach out to their support community for further assistance specific to your installation.
